Please note that this piece is made to order and will look slightly different from the image displayed.
Matthew Baker has been carving since 1978. He was taught by his father, Richard Baker Sr., and his brother, Richard Baker Jr. Matthew's work consists of carved cedar masks, doors, and sculptures that have been purchased by collectors all over North America and Europe. He often works in the Salish style.
The moon is known as a protector and guardian. It is also associated with transformation, due to its influence over the tides and the colour of the sky. Within Northwest Coast art, Moon is often depicted as a female figure with a labret. A labret is a lower lip ornament worn by high-ranking First Nations women. The moon is not common as a family crest figure, but it is very commonly depicted within the art.
