Dark gray soapstone swimming walrus ona rounded base with animal depicted in a swimming posture, its head raised, tail segments together vertically and the front flippers outstretched. The tusks and inlayed eyes are made of bovine bone. Both the animal and the base are carved from a single piece of stone. Although this carving seems to be somewhat fanciful, the form expresses the grace and agility of a swimming walrus. The animal is amazingly well suited for its deep aquatic environment, without the encumbrances of terrestrial gravity. Carved by Putuguk Ashevak. Inscribed on bottom "P. ASHEVAK, TALOYOAK 96." One fin glued. 6" x 6" x 3"
