Sculpture**Four False Face* Iroquois / Onondaga / Six Nations* Gene Thomas* Native American*Four False Faces, highly polished, with the remainder of the stone, unpolished, carved to resemble their entwined hair. The polished areas have a more ochre / yellow earth color; the unpolished areas are predominantly grey; overall there is wonderful natural bands and variations of color in the stone. Beautiful use of the natural elements of the stone incorporated into the carving. Designed for artistic viewing from any angle - great for a table top display. Signed and date on the bottom: Gene Thomas ’83. The facial features are similar to the healing False Face Society masks of the Iroquois medicine societies. Weighs a little over 8 pounds. Stone sculpture measures approximately 7.5 inches high and wide and 4 inches deep. Stands well on its own.
Gene Thomas (Onondaga Iroquois, Canadian Six Nations,1958- ) is the fourth son of Chief Jacob E. Thomas, Sr. Gene began carving wooden false face masks when he was 14 years old under the tutelage of his father. He started soapstone carving in 1980 and has been carving steadily ever since. He is recognized as a premier carver in both wood and stone. His carvings are in collections around the world.
