    Description

For your consideration is an older three-figure Nuu-chah-nulth (formerly Nootka) model totem pole. This totem is carved in red cedar and measures 10.5” tall, 3” wide, and 2.5” deep across the base. The pole features a wolf or dog figure on the top, a frog in the centre, and a human figure mounted on a black painted base. The pole is simply painted in black, green, and red pigments. In terms of style, this pole reflects an affinity for earlier Nuu-chah-nulth sculpture and painting without the strong northern influence seen on later NCN poles. The pole probably dates to around 1900-1910 and was most likely created and sold on Vancouver Island. The shape of the eyes on the top canine figure are especially reminiscent of earlier Nuu-chah-nulth ethnographic pieces, as are the skeletal features of the bottom human figure. The rows of spots on the frog figure are charming and really add interest to the overall composition of the pole. Earlier NCN poles like this are rarely seen in such excellent condition and are not often available on the market. Don’t miss your opportunity to add this wonderful carving to your collection!
