While significance varies Nation to Nation, there are associated traits and representational qualities of the Killerwhale that can be applied cross-culturally. The Killerwhale, also known as the Orca or Blackfish, is a primary crest within many Northwest Coast Native cultures. The Killerwhale can be found along the West Coast throughout the year. Whales usually signify longevity and strong community bonds due to their tendency to travel in close multi-family pods. In artworks, Orcas can be identified by a large, snub-nosed head; elongated nostrils; a wide, toothy mouth; a blowhole; and a fluked tailfin. Killerwhale bodies are usually smooth and rounded when depicted, and a ‘breaching’ position is a popular way of representing the Killerwhale.
