    Description

Indigenous design from the Pacific Northwest is based on the combination of numerous established shapes and forms. From the U-Form to the Ovoid to the S-Shape, these forms are combined in a harmonious fashion to depict various animal and cultural figures. In the 1960s, several First Nations artists started isolating these shapes and forms in order to pay homage to the aesthetic principles of the art rather than to depict specific animals and figures. The artist who created this sleek serigraph, Kwakwaka'wakw artist Rande Cook, has continued this line of experimentation. This print is titled 'In Our Time' and the title can be interpreted as speaking to this concept of abstraction: Northwest Native artists of this time are using aesthetic systems that are millennia old, yet they are finding original ways to apply them. Parts of this design suggest an Eagle or Thundbird, but Rande has explained that the main idea behind this print is "the strong formline that has been the foundation of our art form from the beginnings". The print is signed by the artist and measures 26 inches by 20 inches.
