Description
For sale is a 1971 portfolio of 15 reproductions of Eskimo drawings copyright West Baffin Eskimo Co - Operative Ltd.This edition of 2500 is presented in a lovely green linen portfolio with a large folder explaining Cape Dorset art and history as well as biographies of the artists.
The artists are: Anirnik, Anna, Eegyvudluk, Elijakota, Ikajukta, Kakulu, Kenojuak, Kingmeata, Kudjuakjuk, Lucy, Ningeeuga, Pauta, Pitseolak, Pitalouisa, & Pudlo.
The artists used bright non-indigenous colours: up until this time, Eskimos had always drawn on sealskin, stone and tusks. These drawings were reproduced by modern mechanical methods. Of the drawings in this collection, two are by men, Pudlo and Paula, both in their fifties.
The rest are by women whose ages range from early thirties to 80. Some of the older people have no record of their birth.
All of them however are old enough to have lived in the manner of their ancestors.
The prints reveal Shamanistic dream world mysteries of a hidden spirit world overflowing with half animal, half human creatures and with memories of the past. Inuit express themselves through drawings and carvings to transfers one`s vision from real to unreal.
Measurements are 21 ½ X 16 inches: The prints are in very good condition with slight rumpling and the odd one may have slight folding as the edge, almost not worth mentioning but I want the buyer to know they are very good but not in perfect condition as these drawings were stored since 1971. Printed in Canada by Herzig Somerville Limited.
This is a hard to find Inuit art collection of early Eskimo art drawings.
I have been selling native art on ebay since 1999 so buy with confidence.
