Description

This piece was purchased at Alaska on Madison in NYC in the 1990's. The artist was unknown and it was a vintage piece at the time.
This type of serpentine stone is found in the Cape Dorset region. and is a jade-like lime green with darker green and grey mottling and a few crystalline inclusions. The stone used in this piece is variegated and very beautiful.
I believe the sculpture depicts the Inuit legend of a blind boy and a goose/loon whose sight is restored when the bird carries him and dives beneath the surface of a lake. There is also a myth of a girl who only dreams of geese, which it could represent. You can see that there are no facial features on the boy which I take to signify blindness.
If someone can identify the artist, I would be very grateful. It is unsigned but is a work of unusual merit in excellent condition. Auction starts at cost 20 years ago.
