Ebbe Josvassen ( Inuit, 1909-1995) Female and male spirit masks. Measurements: Female mask: Height: 14 inches. Width: 8 inches. Depth: 2 ½ inches. Weight: about 700 grams. Male Mask: Height: 12 inches. Width: 7 ½ inches. Depth: 2 inches. Weight: about 700 grams. Description: Very rare pair of Inuit female and male spirit masks. Both masks are signed Ebbe Josvassen and dated 1971. Made in Ammassalik, East Greenland. Carved from driftwood. Very fine with grimacing and asymmetrical faces and engraved tattoos. These types of masks were used for singing and dancing in drum fights. Ebbe Josvassen ( 1909-1995) Listed Inuit artist from Ammassalik, ( today known as Tasiilaq). East Greenland. He was a drummer and mask dance performer as well as an artist and known for his series of asymmetrical spirit masks with open mouth used in “drum fights” and games. The masks originate from a private Danish collection. Very rare and should belong to a museum. A certificate of authenticity will be included. Condition: Ready to hang. In near mint condition.
