Description
Born in 1896 in Ivujivik, Quebec and moving after her marriage to the Puvirnituq settlement, Atitu did not begin printmaking until her sixties, (I’m always so encouraged by late bloomers!) In spite of her late start, her work was immediately distinctive. She chose dramatic, sometimes violent, subjects. She made innovative use of the natural edge of the printing stone, her scenes unfolding within that eloquent form. There is a dynamism to her work that makes it instantly recognizable. In this piece, It is not at all clear how this confrontation between a person and a bear will conclude. Signed, dated and titled in penciled syllabics below the image. Lower left corner blind stamped in syllabics. Siasi Atitu’s prints can be found in many public and private collections, including the permanent collection of the Canadian Museum of History, the University of Alberta Art Collection, Musee des Beaux-Arts de Montreal, Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, Avataq Cultural Institute, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and more. Some minor creases, foxing.
